Hey everyone, Ani here with an update on the SVW&F Revamp Project!
Oh, Lord, do we have a lot in store for you all~
POINT THE FIRST: The Fanfiction Arena Needs YOU!
As the webmistress for The Soul Vortex, it is my duty to keep up with our member's contributions to the site, as is adding what we deem appropriate for viewing.
Sadly, I've recently had to reformat my rig, so not only did I lose dozens of hours of work (Not my fault), I seem to be missing every single fanfic that was to be posted on the new site.now, thanks to Drak's genius idea of not pulling down the old site til the week before relaunch, I have links to most fanfics in their deviantART versions, so it's no biggie, as I can simply copy-paste. The only downside to this is that I will NOT be going through any fics and fixing grammatical and/or spelling errors as I have done in the past. Rather, if I DO that at all, it won't be until WELL after the relaunch. If, however, you really desperately need a beta reader for your fics, I can do so, but it will cost you. Pricing is negotiable, and I will strive to be fair in that regard, but please bear in mind that I have bills to pay, and I don't work enough. Throw me a bone?
At the very least, all fanfics will be heavily screened and appropriately rated so as to warn potential readers in the event of adult themes. Please understand that anything you submit to be put on the website WILL be screened for legal purposes, and you will be informed of the results. Chances are, your contributions will be posted anyway, but it's better to be safe than sorry, right?
All that said, if you want your fics posted on the site, email me a .zip or .rar of the series, or send the link to ani@smash.org.au.
POINT THE SECOND: Six Months Later...
Alright. I won't deny that the massive delay of the relaunch is predominately my fault. Again, thanks to the reformatting, I'm very behind! I'm sorry!!!
We're moving to a new server (my personal one), so we won't have ads... at all. And none of that Freewebs crap that breaks the coding!
I'm not going to give you all an ETA, because at the moment, with my current workload, it would be unrealistic, and I hate getting people's hopes up and not being able to meet their expectations.
I'll keep you posted, though. It's the least I can do, for now.
POINT THE THIRD: Bloody Forums
Well, if you didn't hate me before, you will now!
I HATE forumer (our forum host). We can't even customise our themes the way we'd like to, and the support forums are filled with morons who post for the sake of posting, instead of actually offering assistance.
So I've looked into alternatives, and found that Simple Machines is the way to go, IF I can get it working on my server. It's server-based, therefore I can control everything offline and merely upload style sheets whenever I want to change anything, AND the theme can be made from scratch, with new buttons, a banner that fits the page, and even a forum shop, where you can buy all sorts of interesting things (like name changers, title changers, etc), based on your post count.
There will also be a karma system- You will now be able to give each other either Cookies or Cyanide.
...of course, this is pure conjecture, and will all depend on whether Hostrator supports SMF.
Will all that said, in the event that we get SMF working and running, these forums will be shut down, and you will all be given PM's during the fortnight BEFORE the switch is made. We will NOT be making accounts for everyone. It's up to you. You will be able to use the same email address you used to register here, at least.
